Turn Up the Heat!

Winter is approaching and with it is coming the blisteringly cold weather we get every year. Here at American Way Plumbing we know there is a single most important thing for you to do before winter starts – and that’s take care of your heating unit! You don’t want your heater to fail you in the middle of the harshest months, but getting an entire installation isn’t always necessary, so we’ve come up with a list of things that you can do to help keep your heating unit in great condition.       Keep the area clean! You want to make sure there is nothing around your heating unit or vents that could inhibit it from getting the warm air out to you. Making sure that your heating unit is clear so it can operate can help with both keeping your home clean, and heating costs.       Clear out any ducts. If your heating unit has ducts, they could have easily gotten covered in dust over the summer. To make sure that you are not putting dust into your breathing air, you want to keep them as clean as possible.       Winterize your windows. In order to make sure you’re getting the best heating for your entire house, you want to make sure that your heaters are properly cared for and sealed. You can either put storm windows in, cover your windows with plastic, or both (which is probably best). This will keep more warm air in so your heater isn’t going crazy trying to cool a drafty house. Making sure that your heating unit is in good repair can be kept track of fairly easily by doing these few things, but for anything that requires more work you’re going to want to hire a professional. American Way technicians are trained to handle any brand or model of heating unit that you might have, and they are ready to help you out! Help Your Air Conditioner Cool Things Down

Now that summer is winding down, and the temperatures are rising more, it’s a good time to talk about cooling efficiency. Your air conditioner can be overworking up to 40%, meaning you’re losing money with that giant electric bill. We’ve come up with some great solutions to help you save money and make your air conditioner more energy efficient! Here at American Way, we are prepared to help you no matter what! So if you need assistance, let us know! Portable Units – These may seem like they use more power to keep your house clean, but that’s because they’re more suitable to be used in one room. Think of it like this: you’re in the living room and it’s sweltering, take your portable unit and pop it in the living room with you – not only are you keeping it from cooling unnecessary rooms, you can control just how cool you want it to be. Are You Cooling Your Furniture? You could be. If your furniture is in the way of your vents, you could very well be cooling the backside of your couch instead of your house. It’s easiest to rearrange your furniture for a short time than figuring out how to redirect the cool air, so play Tetris with your chairs and reap the cool benefits. Light and Lights – keeping lights on for a long time in your home can encourage heat to stick around. If you want it to be cooler, go without the lights for as long as you can. You can also keep it cool in your home by closing all the curtains from direct sunlight. If you need assistance helping your air conditioner work optimally, contact us here at American Way and we’ll do our best to help! Keep in touch through our Facebook page!

Keep Your AC Clean – Pt. 2!

American Way knows that sometimes it’s too stressful or you’re too busy to call a professional for every little thing that goes wrong with your AC, so we’ve come up with a few more things you can do to keep your AC clean and working properly! Check out our earlier blog for more tips like these below that can help keep up the maintenance on your AC and keep it running more spectacularly than you could ever hope. Remember that sometimes you may need a professional if it’s a job that requires strong chemicals, but if you keep your AC cleaned and looked after on a regular basis, you should be able to manage these on your own.       Keep your AC clean! Your air conditioner can collect lots of nasty debris in a short amount of time, so you want to keep an eye on it. Dust and mold can collect in places and will need to be cleaned regularly. Condensation pans need to be checked frequently to make sure no debris or mold is clogging the system. You want to make sure nothing is sitting on your AC unit; improper care can lead to internal components rusting and making  a bad situation worse when it comes to fixing your AC. To clean your air conditioner you can make a simple mix of 10:1 water and bleach – this should do the trick and kill anything that could be trying to grow on your air conditioner. Be careful, though! Too strong of a mixture could harm your AC instead of cleaning it.       Keep it debris free. Your AC collects a surprising amount of debris, so keeping it clean and free of anything it’s collecting can help keep it in working order. Anything that collects or falls on your vents or coils will make your AC work harder, so try to vacuum or wipe down areas of your air conditioner regularly. Easy Air Conditioner Maintenance

There are many ways to keep up with your air conditioner and ensure that it is working at optimum capacity. Many HVAC units can be kept working properly with the proper maintenance, so we’ve compiled a list of things that you can do to ensure that your AC unit is working at the highest efficiency. Firstly, make sure that there is a radius around the outside unit of at least two feet. Your air conditioner can’t work properly if it’s not getting enough air to work with – not to mention the fact that it could get clogged fairly easily if something is in the way. Make sure that you clean up around your AC unit throughout the year. Clean out debris such as leaves, pollen, and twigs regularly. Make sure that if you mow your lawn regularly that you don’t get the grass clippings in your AC unit. Pour a cup of bleach mixed with water down the air-conditioner condensate drain on an annual basis. This keeps things like mold and algae from building up and ensures that your AC unit is working properly. Inspect the refrigerant lines leading into the house. You want to make sure there are no leaks or damages to mess with your air conditioner’s cooling capacity. Don’t forget to buy a better filter if you haven’t already. There are new filters out there that can attract the tiniest particles like a magnet, even trapping particles that carry bacteria! If you have pets, you want to make sure you are changing your filter on a very regular basis as pet hair can clog the filter easily. Here at American Way, we would be happy to make sure that your air conditioner is working properly. We can do regular maintenance, repair, and installation – and if you’re suspecting something is going wrong, we can stop by and give you a diagnosis. Call us today!

Easy Hacks for Plumbing

American Way has highly trained technicians and staff to help you with all your plumbing needs, but we also understand that sometimes, the job is more easily fixed at home. There are a multitude of reasons for our plumbing to act up on us, and some of them are very easily fixed with simple plumbing hacks. Because we understand that not everything is an emergency, we’ve come up with a few of these simple plumbing hacks to help you should you need to do a quick fix by yourself. If you have a loud sink that echoes or tries to simulate a gong whenever something strikes it, consider using an expanding foam between the two sinks. This will help eliminate the empty space and help offer more stability between the two – meaning, no more gong music when you’re trying to do the dishes. You can use your toilet after turning off the water – and if you’re in need of turning the water off due to extenuating circumstances, knowing how is extremely helpful. Keep a couple of gallon buckets near your toilet. Then, when you flush, pour one into the toilet. One gallon = about one flush, so if you need to keep your water off for long periods of time, keep a few buckets. If your child has dropped a toy down the toilet, it may seem beneficial to try and plunge it out, but a plunger will actually force the toy much further down your pipes. Instead, use a wet-dry vacuum to grasp the toy without getting messy yourself. These tips can help keep your bathroom and plumbing clear when you just need a quick fix, but remember that if your situation requires a professional eye and steady hand, always contact your local plumber for professional assistance. Trying to fix it on your own can make a situation much worse. Check out our Twitter for more updates and information!
